3M Car Care highlights consumer move to DIY car care

 

Elbow Grease Economics, the second annual 3M survey of motorists in the USA, highlights how Americans are focusing on preserving their automotive assets, by investing time and elbow grease to keep them running and looking good.

The study of 1,835 car owners underlines how the current economic climate is changing the way consumers look after their vehicle, and is creating a new, younger, breed of automotive DIYers.

The majority (55%) of respondents stating that they are planning to keep their car for longer and have no plans to trade in or sell. More than one-third (34%) of car owners feel they have to take better care of their car now because they can’t afford a new one. 84 percent are committed to doing the maintenance and up keep needed to keep them running.

Key facts from the 3M survey regarding car care: -

  •  Keeping their car looking good was the top concern for 11 percent of respondents. 
  • More than one-quarter (26%) of car owners are taking better care of the appearance to keep their cars looking new. 
  •  In the 18-25 sector, a massive 31% are focusing on appearance projects to keeping their car looking like new. This has almost doubled year on year (2008 – 16%).
  • Female attitudes to car care has also changed, 26 percent are focused on appearance projects to keep their car looking like new.

 

The Elbow Grease Economics survey highlights how today's consumer, be they male or female, young or old, is seeking to maintain and care for their car with the minimum of external involvement.

 

It suggests that daily maintenance and car care will be completed on the driveways across America, from bulb changing through to cleaning and polishing, this exciting new breed of automotive DIYers will be looking for the best products to make this possible.
